If you're a webmaster, you can probably appreciate the fact that broken links can often harm the reputation of your site. Newbies and veterans alike should pay close attention to maintaining a working web site with working links.
This is where Xenu's Link Sleuth comes in. It is a free application developed by Tilman Hausherr in Visual C with support for proxies. Link Sleuth spiders a web site and checks the status of each link and notifies you if a "200 Found response" is not received. A 200 reponse is a good thing, it means the document was found whereas a 404 response means not found.
You should not run this program on other peoples' web sites as it makes a lot of requests and it's just rude to do that without permission.
Xenu's Link Sleuth otherwise does a great job of letting you know where you should fix links on your web site! There is a second download link provided for the 64-bit beta version which may or may not offer more flexibility on users running a 64-bit version of Windows (ie. Windows 7).
Compatibility and License
Link Sleuth is provided under a freeware license on Windows from miscellaneous software with no restrictions on usage. Download and installation of this PC software is free and 1.3.8 is the latest version last time we checked.
